History of Numbers and Algebra
Young and Younger Numerical Knowledge
Numbers have not be known forever. Algebraic and
geometric reasoning has been used to develop our conception
of them beyond whole numbers and the use of fractions.
- Zero was possibly a tenth century invention - who
needs a symbol to denote nothing?
- Before the late 1500s, calculations involving negative
negatives were regarded with suspicion, considered to be
imaginary. Calculations involving them might be done in
private but would be reformulated with positive numbers
before any public appearance. Negative numbers became
publicly acceptable, at least for mathematical scholars,
towards the end of the fifteenth century. But even
today, accountants use parentheses in their reports to
higher management and in company annual report to avoid
the appearance of negative numbers. Negative numbers are
still not completely accepted :)
- Then once negatives had been accepted as real and not
just imaginary by mathematical scholars, their square
roots were still regarded as imaginary or figments of
the imagination. The identification of complex numbers
with points in the plane due to Gauss, Argand, Wessel
and others in the 1800's made these figments of the
imagination real.
It seems that the algebraic description of computations
starting with positive numbers gradually and symbolically
suggested the existence of further numbers to permit the
algebra to proceed. One concern of modern algebra has been
the existence of numbers or computational objects satisfying
symbolically described calculation rules or relations.
Matrices and functions provide examples of computational
objects (or quantities) besides and beyond positive numbers.

8 to 14 and postscript What
is a Variable point to a greater & clear use of words in algebra. Chapter
14 introduces a 4th skill for algebra, an elaboration of the
third: - The direct and indirect use of formulas, numerically and
algebraically, is unifying theme that should be mentioned aloud, with words,
in each and every use of formula.
