A Quibble - What is Algebra?
(Another quibble, what is a quibble?)
Decimal notation and operations can be regarded as part of algebra:
they are symbolic. But there is more to the algebraic or symbolic thought
process than this arithmetic and very concrete use of symbols. The algebraic or
symbolic thought process of higher math involves the further abstraction: the
repeated use of symbols more or less as pronouns for numbers and quantities,
known or not, constant or not. The question What is algebra? can be answered in
different ways. In past centuries, algebra may have meant all of math besides
geometry. In the 20th Century, high school and college math courses in North
America may give the initial impression that algebra is a mathematical subject
besides say trig and calculus. While algebra is represented by all subjects it
touches, the notion of what is algebra could begin with the discussion and
illustration of [three skills].
Decimal expressions for real numbers uses symbols, namely digits and
operation signs, with a fixed numerical significance. Symbol formulas or rules
of calculations for perimeters, areas and volumes, monetary amounts, etc
introduces symbols (letters) with a fixed physical or monetary significance, but
with numerical significance that may be known or not, given or not, fixed or
not. Phrases such as Let x be a real number introduce symbols with no
fixed numerical value and no physical significance. But geometry, physic and
commerce allow us to talk about numbers and quantities with whose value may
change.

8 to 14 and postscript What
is a Variable point to a greater & clear use of words in algebra. Chapter
14 introduces a 4th skill for algebra, an elaboration of the
third: - The direct and indirect use of formulas, numerically and
algebraically, is unifying theme that should be mentioned aloud, with words,
in each and every use of formula.
