Help for Struggling and Gifted Students
For high school mathematics and calculus, I can provide one-to-one
mathematics skill development and tracking for struggling to gifted
students. The basic problem for many students is not ability, but lack of
awareness of how skills and concepts depend on earlier ones, and of how
written work needs to be done and recorded in steps that can be seen as
done or later for skill verification or correction.
Seeing how skills depend on earlier ones provides one logical structure
for building skill and confidence. Further structure is provided by
showing students how to do and record their work steps that can be seen
and corrected as done or later. The domino effects of mistakes and care
can be seen in skill mastery. That give ends, values and tool for
further skill building at home, at work and in all subjects.
Understanding why as as well as how
Young students assume methods met in mathematics do not need to be
justified. In their eyes, teachers are hired to give methods that are
correct, and not in need of justification. Learning to do without
understanding why is acceptable for primary and junior high school
mathematics. But advanced college programs in mathematical subjects
require comprehension as well. In my tutoring, to the greatest extent
possible, I include explanation of methods and formulas to the point that
helps skill mastery without overwhelming it. Explanations of why offers a
firmer base and a headstart for college mathematics.
Good preparation for mathematics-based college programs requires
comprehension of the origins and justification of methods and formulas.
The know-how that is required to use methods and formulas is often
illustrated and reinforced by the derivation or explanations in
mathematics and the sciences. My tutoring service is excellent for
students who are struggling because they are adverse to rote learning
and/or for students whose parents are adverse to rote learning too.
Week-end and After-School Mathematics Jobs
Would you teen or preteen work harder at mastering mathematics if he or
she was paid for effort and performance? If so, with your funds to pay
for his or her time, and mine, I can provide, track and test and skill
development. Here some students may benefit from one to one or group tutoring.
The latter is for students at the same level. Independent studies can
also be supervised.
