Common Phrases used to Compare Counts and Measures
- unsigned numbers and quantities
In all the different comparisons below, at least one of the
phrase more than and less than can be used. All other
phrases cannot be universally employed.
In talking about counts, the phrases
- more than
- greater than
- larger than
- bigger than
all agree. Here the count or number 834 is more than, greater than and
larger than the count or number 323 by the difference 834 - 323 = 511 units.
In talking about counts, the two phrases
all agree. Here the count 323 is less than and smaller than the
count 834 by the difference 834 - 323 = 511 units.
In talking about measures, the phrases
- more than
- greater than
- larger than
- bigger than
all agree. For example, the measure 8.34 grams is more than, greater
than and larger than the measure 3.23 grams by the difference 8.34 - 3.23 = 5.11 grams.
In talking about counts, the two phrases
all agree. For example, the measure 3.23 grams is less than and
smaller than measure 8.34 grams by the difference 8.34 - 3.23 = 5.11 grams.
In talking about heights, we may say 150 centimeters is higher than,
taller than greater than, larger than and more than 120 centimeters by the difference 30
centimeters. We may also say 120 centimeters is lower than, shorter than,
less than and smaller than 150 centimeters by the difference 30 centimeters.
In talking about speed, we may say 100 kilometers per hour is more than, faster
than and greater than 60 kilometers per hour by the difference 40 kilometers per hour.
we may also say 60 kilometers per hour is less than, slower
than and smaller than 100 kilometers by the difference 40 kilometers per hour.
In talking about position in a queue, we may say the 2nd place is ahead of the
5th place by the difference 5- 2 = 3 places.
In talking about temperature, 25 degrees Celcius is more than, warmer than
and greater than 5 degrees Celcius
by the difference 20 degrees - Celcius ones, and 80 degrees Fahrenheit is more than,
warmer than and greater than 50 degrees Fahrenheit
by the difference 30 degrees -Fahrenheit ones. Or we may say, 5 degrees Celcius is less
than, colder than
and lower than 5 degrees Celcius
by the difference 20 degrees - Celcius ones, and 50 degrees Fahrenheit is less than, colder
than and lower than 80 degrees Fahrenheitby the difference 30 degrees -Fahrenheit ones.
In talking about money, we may say 500 pennies is larger than, more than and bigger
than 200 pennies by the difference 300 pennies. Or, we may say 300 pennies is smaller
than, less than and fewer
than 200 pennies by the difference 300 pennies.

plans drawns to scale. Learning how to gather and measure all the
ingredients, pots and pans for a dish or a meal, along with
cleaning up sets the stage for like activities or experiments in
science courses, and in developing organizational skills,

Basic skills include
time-date-calendar Matters; money matters; map, plan and
scale diagram matters;counting, measuring and figuring;
decision making with logic and likelyhood; being careful and
being aware of the domino effect of mistakes; reading and
writing with precision.
Is your child able to add, subtract and multiply amounts
of money, work with fractions, work with clocks and calendars,
work with maps and plans, and measure length, weight-mass and
volume? Schools may promote your son or daughter without
providing basic skills in reading, writing and
arithmetic.

deceptive - light rather than deep. For that reason, students
with learning difficulties determined not to let it get in their
way may go deeper and farther than those with none. High marks,
if the come easy, may be deceptive - provide a too light and not
a deep mastery. That could have been your problem in secondary
school, one that leads to comprehension shock or difficulties in
calculus and more generally in the first year of college. Bon
