4. Similarity - Definition/Characterization with Coordinates
This codification provides a working definition, practical for
mathematics and for the design of objects with maps and plans on paper or
in electronic form.
We will repeat the foregoing introduction or development. We will
answer the question of when are two objects, drawn or real, similar,
using the coordinate representation of a diagram or drawing of the
objects to scale or with a scale factor K.
The map that take a point [a,b] to K*[a,b] is called a dilatation of
the plane.
We design or draw an real or imagined object in the plane.
In map coordinates, the object is given or represented by a set of points
S1. The object may be drawn on many different
maps to many different scales. Each choice corresponds to a different
selection of map units - a different scale factor.
We may codify and identify teach real shape with a set of coordinates in
a map - part of the plane.
Definition: Two shapes are said to be isometric if the
image of one under some combination of translations, rotations and
reflections equals the image of the other. Two shapes are said to be
similar if there is a dilatation of one is isometric to the other.
Claim and Converse Claim: (A) In similar sets of points in the
plane, corresponding angles are equal and corresponding sides are
proportional by a proportionality constant k >0. The similarity
becomes or is a isometric when that proportionality constant k = 1.
(B) More generally, the latter condition is also sufficient for
the sets to be similar because the condition implies the existence of a
coordinate systems in which the sets are similar.

The above definition covers all the similarity concepts included in high
school mathematics for circles, squares, triangles and polygons in manner
that is consistent with the primary school discussion of like shapes; and
in a manner that is consistent with the discussion of the scaling of
lengths, areas and volumes along lines, in a plane and more generally in
space. For spatial version, repeat the foregoing discussion with three
coordinates in place of two. For linear versions, repeat the foregoing
with one coordinate instead of two.

scale diagram matters;counting, measuring and figuring;
decision making with logic and likelyhood; being careful and

of money, work with fractions, work with clocks and calendars,
